After a long and competitive process, meet the two young people who will be helping lead the charge on YLC's next campaign! Hear more about them in their own words...
Hey! My name is Gabriella Diaz, but most call me Gabby. I am a junior at the NYC iSchool-- I am 16 years young at the moment. This is my first internship (so I am super excited), but I have had previous jobs and commitments. If I am not at school or out with friends I am either working with children or continuing my boxing training. I spend most of my time with my own friends or the little ones because I think it is important to stay youthful and build stable relationships. I also think it is important to stay healthy, not just physically, but mentally-- why not do it through a sport you love.
I am passionate about social justice because being equal amongst everyone else should be a right, and the fact that we must advocate for these rights that should be a given is a disgrace. I am so happy to be working with an organization like RAP because everyone is already accepted. I believe they set standards for what a real community should look like- inclusive, colorful, and collaborative. This can produce greatness.
Hi, my name is Fatou Gakou. I am a 17-year-old senior at Validus Preparatory Academy in the Bronx. I am originally from Gambia and came to the United States in 2007. I came to obtain knowledge and help others with what I have. I have been working with READ Alliance since January 2015. I tutor elementary school students from grade K-2 in reading. I am very passionate about my education and also education for others. I believe that education is the key to success. People should take advantage of all the opportunities that are given to them. Seek knowledge everywhere and whenever you can.
I joined RAP because I want to be surrounded by those who have the same goal as me. I want to work to improve educational systems with the issues that are present today. I was accepted as one of the RAP interns this school year 2015-2016, and I am really excited to work with RAP members and my partner intern, Gabby, to achieve our goals together.
